Since I upgraded Microsoft Office 2016 for MAC software on my old macbook pro, every time I open a word document, it gets very slow. Today it suddenly freezes and shut itself down. When I open it again, I lost my hours of work content. This wikiHow teaches you how to recover an unsaved Microsoft Word document, as well as how to restore unsaved changes to a saved document. You can do this on both Windows and Mac computers. If you can't recover your Word document using Microsoft Word's built-in AutoRecover, you'll need to use data recovery software to attempt to recover the document.

Nobody likes losing a document, especially if they've invested a great deal of time and effort in its creation. If your company has a Mac computer running Microsoft Word 2008, the software has an automatic recovery feature called AutoRecovery that should automatically load your recovered document the next time you launch Word. If the recovered file does not automatically pop up as it should the next time you open Word, you can open the file manually via your Mac's Finder application.
1.
Click the 'Finder' app icon on your Mac's dock. If you don't have Finder in your dock, click your 'Applications' folder and click 'Finder' to open the application.
2.
Click your username under the Places heading on the left of the Finder window to load your user directory.
Alternatively, you can load your user directory by clicking the name of your Mac's hard drive under the Devices heading in the Finder and then clicking 'Users' and your username.
3.
Click 'Documents,' click 'Microsoft User Data' and then click 'Office 2008 AutoRecovery.'
4.
Click the Microsoft Word AutoRecovery file you want to load.
Tip
If the AutoRecovery file is not as up to date as you would like, you can modify Word's AutoRecovery settings so that it saves a recovery file more often. To do this, click 'Word' on the main menu in Word and select 'Preferences.' Click the 'Save' icon and change the value in the 'Minutes' box located next to the Save AutoRecover Info check box.
